Other Office Furniture

The use of purpose-designed storage equipment can greatly reduce the time required to locate and re-file optical discs, CDs, tape and film cartridges, cassettes and reels, fiche, jackets and aperture cards. Some cabinets are also fire resistant to provide extra security for archival records. Retrieval times from film formats can be further reduced by the use of CAR (Computer Assisted Retrieval) techniques. CAR systems usually rely on the manual extraction and loading of the relevant cassette or cartridge from store before they can automatically display the desired image. The film has to be re-filed after use and well-planned storage can speed location and replacement while reducing the danger of filing errors and providing protection against dust and scratches.

Multi-drawer filing cabinets are available with partitions to hold all types of magnetic and optical media. and specially designed equipment is available for the storage of all microforms. Discs, reels and cartridges are normally stored in divided drawers in metal cabinets or in rotating carousels. Fiche and jackets can be held in books with pages which are actually fiche envelopes, panels comprising pockets which hold fiche with their titles visible for rapid location, divided trays or purpose designed metal cabinets. Fiche panels are usually available in light or dark colours. Diazo and silver fiche without header stripes require a white background, while vesicular fiche headers are often easier to read against a dark background. Special envelopes should be used to protect fiche in trays or drawers and some UK suppliers are listed under "Consumables". Aperture cards are often stored in divided drawers in cabinets but large collections may be held in trays suspended in powered units, which can automatically bring the relevant tray to the retrieval point by the shortest route.
